Northfield Chiropractor Discusses New BPA Study

There other week I was talking to a patient about the toxins that can build up in the body when another person listening in on the conversation asked in a very sarcastic tone, “Toxins?! What are ‘toxins’”? He didn’t think that I could give an answer to that question, so his smirk melted away when I started talking about the most researched and most common toxin Bispheol-A (BPA).

I touched on BPA in a previous blog post, but a new study about BPA causes me to take another run at informing local Northfield residents about the chemical and what they can do rid their bodies of it, and more importantly how to avoid the chemical.

The study mentioned above states that people who worked at factories that deal with BPA in higher quantities than the normal population has over 4 times higher chance of getting breast cancer. This furthers the understanding that in order for women to remain healthy and to potentially AVOID breast cancer, then ridding the body of this chemical is very important. What is even more important is to avoid exposure to these chemicals.

Men should not dismiss the effects of BPA exposure since a 2009 study showed that BPA exposure to factory workers in China had over 4 times the amount of erectile dysfunction than in a control group. This means that exposure to this chemical has the potential to effect erectile dysfunction.

There is no need to panic about this news, but it should inspire some actions to be taken. The first, and most important action, is for pregnant women to avoid and detox as best they can. This is because the most harmful effects of BPA happen to the unborn fetus just like the toxins from smoking or alcohol. Second, one should find the best way to AVOID these chemicals. Here is a non-comprehensive list of things to avoid helping lessen exposure:

  • Try not to touch receipts (especially from gas stations)
  • Don’t use plastic containers to reheat food
  • Avoid canned foods
  • Give up canned soda (there are so many other reasons this should be an afterthought by now)
  • Avoid packaged foods whenever possible
  • Use BPA safe bottles
  • Eat at Home (many meals are prepackaged from restraunts)
  • Buy personal care products from glass containers

The next step to ridding your body of BPA is to help your body get rid of it. The way that your body gets rid of BPA is through detoxification in the liver. That is why it is so important to detoxify your liver in a biannual fashion. What does it meant to detox the liver? That means that you give the body the precursors to enzymatic pathways to help the body get rid of the toxic substances. How can you do this? One method of detoxification is to eat things that help detoxify your liver on a daily basis. Some of the great things that help the body are:

  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Cabbage
  • Brussel Sprouts
  • Radishes
  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • Broccoli
  • And several more veggies!

Another method of detoxification is to go through your trained healthcare professional. They can give you an individual protocol that can give your body a head start to help rid your body of toxins. The amount of detox will depend on your lifestyle and on your wellness plan so please call your healthcare professional for more information (507-645-8000).

Call to action:

Rid your body of unnecessary chemicals that can do harm. Also, make sure that you are detoxifying on a daily basis with detoxifying foods. Twice a year go through a detoxification process under the supervision of your healthcare professional.
