We have previously discussed this powerful antioxidant. That blog discussed the benefits of Co-Q10 and muscle pain caused by statin drugs. There are several more benefits that this vitamin has, but this blog with a focus on heart disease.
This first article discusses Co-Q10 helping to decrease inflammatory markers. Most of us have heard of C-reactive protein and how it correlates with chronic low-grade inflammation. Another one of these markers is called IL-6. These are both signs that our immune system is reacting too much and needs to be calmed down or our heart (and many other organs) is in trouble. The specific aspect that this study determined was that Co-Q10 had a significant effect in lowering IL-6 in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). That is the artery that supplies the heart with blood. It is also the artery that is described when people talk about a triple-bypass.
The second study looked at a population of Americans. They then looked at what the concentration of Co-Q10 in the patients’ bloodstream. It was found that patients who had a higher level of Co-Q10 had a lower risk of CAD. That is HUGE, because CAD is the number one killer of Americans. To find natural ways to decrease this risk is a huge benefit because there has been such a small amount of side-effects reported for Co-Q10.
When taking Co-Q10 you must make sure that you are taking the proper dose. You must also make sure that you are taking a good supplement. Not all supplements are created equally and more often than not you are getting what you pay for. Also, Co-Q10 is a fat-soluble vitamin. That means that you should take it with a healthy fat such as olive oil. However, not all olive oils are treated equally too. Extra Virgin is just a label and is not regulated in the best way possible. One place to make sure that you have good olive oil is to check with the experts in Northfield at Northfield Olive Oils and Vinegars!
